The He 162 a light Interceptor-fighter of the German "Luftwaffe", was to go into mass production before the beginning of 1945. Towards the end of 1944 a fast and easy to build Interceptor was built. The Heinkel Company in Vienna-Schwechat built and test flew the new aircraft in only 69 days. Component groups were assembled in many factories - some of which were in underground mine shafts - right up to the end of the War. Between February and April 1945, 116 aircraft were built. In service testing with Fighter Group No1 was commenced in northern Germany in the middle of March 1945. Shortly before the War ended, No1 Fighter Group undertook a few sorties against low flying aircraft from the airfield of Leck near Flensburg. The last action by an He 162 took place on 4th May 1945 and ended with a Typhoon being shot down.
